BT / Openreach Payslip Explained 2026/27

What Is OCL? Engineer Pay, On-Call & the 10% Pension Match

Last updated: 17 September 2026 · 2026/27 UK tax year

If you're a BT or Openreach engineer, your payslip is full of acronyms and allowances negotiated by the CWU. Here's exactly how your pay, OCL, and massive pension match work.

Openreach Engineer Pay 2026 — What Do You Actually Earn?

Unlike the NHS or Civil Service, BT Group and Openreach salaries are not published in a simple public pay scale. Pay is negotiated annually with the CWU (Communications Workers Union) and varies heavily based on your specific CWU zone, London Weighting, and length of service.

Role / Experience LevelEstimated Annual Salary (2026)
Trainee Engineer (New Start)~£22,925
Openreach Engineer (Mid)~£35,160 – £35,554
Senior / Experienced Engineer~£40,000 – £47,000
London-based Telecoms Engineer~£46,759 (Inc. London Weighting)

BTRSS Pension — Free Money

This calculator assumes you are on the BTRSS (post-2018). If you contribute 5% of your pay, BT will match it with a massive 10% employer contribution.

What Is OCL on My Payslip? On-Call Allowance Decoded

This is the single most common question from new engineers. OCL stands for On-Call Liability.

It is a standby allowance paid to engineers who are scheduled to be "on call" outside of normal working hours. You receive this fixed weekly payment simply for being available, whether you actually get called out or not. It is fully taxable and subject to National Insurance.

What happens if I get called out?

If your phone rings and you have to work, you will receive a Call-Out Premium on top of your OCL. Depending on your CWU agreement, this is usually paid at a minimum of 2 hours at an enhanced rate (often time-and-a-third or time-and-a-half).

BTRSS Pension — Why BT Matches Up to 10%

If you joined BT or Openreach after 2018, you will be enrolled in the BTRSS (BT Retirement Saving Scheme), which is a Defined Contribution (DC) pension.

BT offers one of the most generous employer matches in the UK. If you contribute 5% of your salary, BT will match it with a 10% contribution. That means a massive 15% of your salary goes into your pension pot every month, but only 5% comes out of your take-home pay.

Warning: If you opt to contribute less than 5%, BT scales back their match. Don't leave free money on the table!

BTPS Legacy vs BTRSS New Joiners — Two Completely Different Retirements

You may hear older colleagues talking about their "final salary" pension. BT operates the BT Pension Scheme (BTPS), which is a legacy defined benefit scheme. It was closed to new entrants in 2018.

  • Pre-2018 Joiners: May be in BTPS Section C. Your retirement income is based on your final salary and years of service, regardless of stock market performance.
  • Post-2018 Joiners: Will be in the BTRSS. Your retirement income depends on the size of your investment pot (hence why getting that 10% employer match is crucial).

London Weighting for Openreach Staff

If you work in London or the immediate surrounding areas, you will receive a London Weighting allowance. This is negotiated by the CWU and varies depending on whether you are in Inner London or Outer London.

It is added directly to your gross salary, which means it is fully taxable, subject to NI, and (crucially) counts towards your pension calculations.

How to Access Your BT Payslip (SAP SuccessFactors)

BT uses SAP SuccessFactors for all HR and payroll systems. You can view your digital payslips by logging into the MyBT intranet portal. Payslips are generally available to view a few days before your actual payday.

Frequently asked questions

OCL stands for On-Call Liability allowance. It is a standby availability payment given to engineers who are scheduled to be on call outside of normal working hours. If you are actually called out, you will receive an additional call-out premium on top of the OCL.

In 2026, a mid-level Openreach engineer typically earns between £35,160 and £35,554 annually. Senior engineers and team leaders can earn up to £47,000, particularly if they receive London Weighting.

Yes, very generously. If you are in the newer BTRSS scheme and you contribute 5% of your salary, BT will match it with a 10% employer contribution, putting a total of 15% into your pension pot.

BTPS (BT Pension Scheme) is a legacy final salary or hybrid scheme that was closed to new joiners in 2018. BTRSS (BT Retirement Saving Scheme) is the current Defined Contribution (DC) scheme for all staff who joined after 2018.
