Firefighter Pay Scales 2026/27

In July 2026, the National Joint Council (NJC) confirmed a 3.8% pay award for all firefighting roles covered by the "Grey Book".

For a standard wholetime Firefighter, the pay scale typically progresses from Development (£31,539) to Competent (£40,358). Similar structured scales exist for Crew Managers and Watch Managers. For a deep dive into how to read your payslip and allowances, check our firefighter payslip guide.

The New 5-Tier FPS 2015 Pension

The vast majority of serving firefighters are members of the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 2015. Starting in April 2026, the scheme underwent a major reform.

  • 5 Tiers: The scheme was expanded from four to five tiers to more fairly distribute the contribution burden.
  • Actual Pay: The contribution rate is now calculated based on your actual pensionable pay, rather than your Whole Time Equivalent (WTE). This is a massive change for part-time/retained firefighters.
  • High Contributions: Firefighters continue to pay some of the highest pension contribution rates in the UK, typically ranging from 11.5% to 15.0%.

Flexible Duty System (FDS) Allowance

Station Managers and above often work the Flexible Duty System, providing cover on a rota basis. This attracts an allowance, typically 20% of basic pay.

Pension impact:Unlike many allowances in other sectors, the FDS payment is fully pensionable under the FPS 2015. Our calculator automatically handles this deduction when you check the "Flexible Duty System" box.
