Teacher Pay Scales 2026/27 — Main and Upper Pay Range
State school teachers in England and Wales are paid according to statutory pay scales. When you first qualify as an Early Career Teacher (ECT), you usually begin on point 1 of the Main Pay Scale (M1). You then typically advance one point each year, subject to performance, until you reach M6.
Once you reach the top of the Main Pay Scale, you can apply to cross the "threshold" onto the Upper Pay Scale (UPS). This range (U1 to U3) provides higher pay in recognition of substantial and sustained contributions to your school. Understanding how your gross salary converts to net pay is crucial, which we cover extensively in our teacher payslip guide.
TLR Allowances — What Are They Worth After Tax?
If you take on additional responsibilities beyond standard classroom teaching—such as becoming a Head of Department or leading a specific whole-school initiative—you may be awarded a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) payment.
TLR1, TLR2 and TLR3 Rates 2026
- TLR1: £9,699 to £16,958 (Requires line management responsibility for a significant number of people).
- TLR2: £3,088 to £8,133 (Typically for Heads of smaller subjects or specific sustained responsibilities).
- TLR3: £590 to £1,765 (Fixed-term awards for specific, time-limited projects).
Tax Warning: Because TLRs are added to your existing salary, they are taxed at your highest marginal rate. Furthermore, adding a TLR to your base pay might push your total gross salary into a higher Teachers' Pension Scheme deduction tier, meaning you might see less of the TLR in your pocket than you expect. Our calculator automatically handles this complex interaction.
Teachers' Pension Scheme Contributions
The Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) is one of the most generous in the public sector, offering a guaranteed income in retirement. However, the employee contribution rates are high and operate on a tiered basis. Your contribution tier is based on your actual pensionable earnings (including TLRs), not your full-time equivalent salary if you work part-time.
- Up to £34,289.99: 7.4%
- £34,290 to £45,214.99: 8.6%
- £45,215 to £54,499.99: 10.2%
- £54,500 to £72,559.99: 11.3%
- £72,560 and above: 11.7%
London Weighting and Fringe Areas
To compensate for the significantly higher cost of living in and around the capital, teachers in London receive higher base pay scales rather than a percentage uplift. There are three distinct pay tables: Inner London, Outer London, and the Fringe (areas directly bordering London). If you teach in one of these areas, simply type your exact gross salary into our calculator's base salary field to get your precise net pay.
Tax Efficiency for Teachers
As a teacher, you have access to powerful tax-saving mechanisms.
If your school offers it, you can lease an electric vehicle or buy a bike using Salary Sacrifice. Because TPS contributions (8.6%+) and standard taxes (20%+) are high, taking the lease cost out of your gross pay before these deductions are made makes running a brand new car incredibly cheap compared to a private lease.
