WARNING: 1 in 3 Young Workers Are Being Scammed. Check Your Payslip Now!
Are you a student or under 21? You are the number one target for bad bosses. They rely on the fact that you won't check your payslip or know your rights.
From stealing your "birthday pay rise" to charging you for a greasy polo shirt, employers steal millions from young workers every year. Use our strict legal checker below to calculate your True Effective Hourly Rate and expose wage theft.
🚨 SCAM ALERT: You Are Being Underpaid!
Enter your details below to check if your effective hourly rate is legal.
1. The "Birthday Scam": How Bosses Steal Your Pay Rise
In the UK, the legal minimum wage jumps massively when you hit specific birthdays. When you turn 18, it goes from £6.40 to £8.60. When you turn 21, it jumps again to £11.44.
THE SCAM: Employers frequently "forget" to update their payroll software when you have a birthday. If you turned 18 two months ago and are still being paid £6.40, your boss owes you hundreds of pounds in backpay.
2. Unpaid Training & Uniforms: Is Your Boss Breaking The Law?
Many cafes, bars, and retail shops pay exactly minimum wage. But they will then make you:
- Pay £15 for a mandatory branded t-shirt or apron.
- Do 2 hours of online "e-learning modules" at home, unpaid.
- Stay 15 minutes late to cash up the till, unpaid.
This is illegal. If you earn minimum wage, any deduction for a uniform, or any unpaid time working, drags your average hourly rate below the legal minimum. If this happens to you, they must bump your pay up to compensate.
3. Under 18 Tax Rules: Are You Supposed To Pay Tax and NI?
The biggest shock for young workers is seeing deductions on their very first payslip.
Income Tax: There is no "age limit" for tax. Every person gets a tax-free Personal Allowance of £12,570 a year. If you work a lot of hours in the summer, your payroll might think you'll earn over £12,570 for the year and put you on an Emergency Tax code. (You can claim this back).
National Insurance: If you are under 16, you do not pay NI. Once you turn 16, you will pay 8% Employee NI if you earn more than £242 in a week.
4. How To Claim Back Stolen Wages
If our calculator above flashes RED, you have been underpaid. Do not let them get away with it.
- Take a screenshot of the calculator and email it to your manager demanding the shortfall be added to your next payslip.
- If they refuse or ignore you, contact HMRC. HMRC has a dedicated team for Minimum Wage enforcement and they will investigate the company anonymously and force them to pay up.
Young Worker Panic FAQs (Real Legal Answers)
Do under 18s pay tax in the UK?
Yes, if you earn enough. Age does not exempt you from Income Tax. Every person in the UK gets a Personal Allowance (usually £12,570 a year). If your part-time job or summer job pays more than this, you will pay 20% Income Tax on the amount above it.
Do 16 and 17 year olds pay National Insurance?
No National Insurance is payable if you are under 16. However, once you turn 16, you must pay Employee National Insurance (8%) if you earn over the threshold (usually £242 a week).
What is the minimum wage for a 16 and 17 year old in 2026?
The legal minimum wage for an under-18 in the 2026/27 tax year is £6.40 an hour. If you are aged 18 to 20, it jumps to £8.60 an hour.
Do I have to pay for my work uniform if I earn minimum wage?
Only if it doesn't drop your pay below minimum wage! If you earn the exact minimum wage, and your boss deducts £15 for a polo shirt, your effective pay rate drops below the legal minimum. This is completely illegal.
Are unpaid trial shifts illegal in the UK?
Yes, if they involve doing real work for an extended period. A quick 1-hour observation is fine, but if you are serving customers or cleaning for a 4-hour 'trial' and don't get the job, they legally must pay you minimum wage for that time.
